Personal Care Attendant Classroom Program

We are currently recruiting individuals that are interested in training to become Personal Care Attendants. Eligible candidates will have the one-day training course paid by skilled nursing facilities in Pinellas County. Our affiliate facilities will typically assume the cost for your Personal Care Attendant training, along with American Heart Association CPR training, and Continuing Education units PLUS guaranteed employment after successful completion of the Patient Care Attendant training!

The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) has approved the role of Personal Care Attendants to perform resident care procedures currently delivered by Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) in skilled facilities* (Chapter 400 F.S.).  2023 Florida Statutes states that skilled nursing facilities are allowed to employ personal care attendants iif such personal care attendants are participating in the personal care attendant training program developed by the agency, in accordance with 42 C.F.R. ss. and in consultation with the Board of Nursing.  This program will enable the PCA to further obtain skills and training toward the goal of successfully passing the CNA exam and moving into a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

The personal care attendant program must consist of a minimum of 16 hours of education and must include all of the topics and lessons specified in the program curriculum.  The program curriculum must include, but need not be limited to, training in all of the following content areas:
a. Residents’ rights.
b. Confidentiality of residents’ personal information and medical records.
c. Control of contagious and infectious diseases.
d. Emergency response measures.
e. Assistance with activities of daily living.
f. Measuring vital signs.
g. Skin care and pressure sores prevention.
h. Portable oxygen use and safety.
i. Nutrition and hydration.
j. Dementia care.
                                                                                                                                                                                                A personal care attendant must complete the 16 hours of required education before having any direct contact with a resident.  A personal care attendant may not perform any task that requires clinical assessment, interpretation, or judgment.  An individual employed as a personal care attendant under s. 400 (2)(d) must work exclusively for one nursing facility before becoming a certified nursing assistant.

This course is designed to meet the 16-hour classroom module.

In this role you will assist the nursing team make a difference and impact the lives of our residents by providing everyday caregiving support like:

  • Making an Occupied or Unoccupied Bed
  • Passing Fresh Ice Water
  • Passing Meal Trays/Open cartons packets
  • Checking Resident’s Vital Signs
  • Performing One (1) Person Transfers
  • Repositioning the Resident in Bed/Float Heels
  • Transferring a Resident to a Wheelchair using a Gait Belt
  • Using a Gait Belt to Assist with Ambulation
  • Oral Care/Denture Care (alert residents)
  • Providing a Bed Bath/Perineal/Catheter Care
  • Assisting the Resident with Getting Dressed
  • Assisting with Hearing Aids
  • Assisting the Resident to Bathroom or to use a Urinal (1 Person Assist)

Position Requirements:

  • Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age
  • Ability to communicate with residents and staff
  • Ability to follow directions and to complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to work collaboratively and provide quality care to our residents.
  • Passionate about working with senior population, Works with families, and other staff members
  • Previous experience preferred.

This is a self paced course.  You can start and stop the course as works for your schedule throughout your 7 day access period.

How long do I have access to the course?

You will have access for 90 days.  You will be able to review any of the lessons as many times as you wish during the 9 days of access.

Can I have face to face interaction with the Instructor

What are my next steps once I complete this course?

Once you complete the five (5) hour classroom portion of this training, you would need to schedule the three (3) hour skills competency training at the sponsoring skilled nursing facility.  Once you complete the full eight (8) hours, you would be eligible to start employment as a PCA.
