In order to be eligible for the 2 hour refresher course, you must be able to prove you have an active/current certification by providing a valid copy of your Med Tech certification completed within the last year.
This 2-hour annual refresher course for current Med Techs provides updates and current training regarding assistance with self-administration of medications in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF) or Home Care setting. Southern Technical Institute Med Tech online curriculum focuses on all aspects of the current Florida laws for assistance with self-administration of medications and medication practices. Medication safety being the top priority.

- Florida law and rule requirements with respect to the supervision, assistance, administration, and management of medications;
- Procedures and techniques for assisting the resident with self-administration of medication including how to read a prescription label;
- Providing the right medications to the right resident;
- Common medications;
- The importance of taking medications as prescribed;
- Recognition of side effects and adverse reactions and procedures to follow when residents appear to be experiencing side effects and adverse reactions;
- Documentation and record keeping;
- Medication storage and disposal.

What is the difference between a 6 hour training and a 2 hour annual renewal training for CURRENT med techs?
A 6 hour initial training course is for students who do not have a current med tech certification. AHCA requires initial training for med techs to be taught in-person only not on-line by an RN instructor. The 2 hour annual renewal training course is for students who currently have a med tech certification, but it is about to expire. A 2 hour annual update for med techs to stay current is required by Florida regulations. This renewal course is allowed by AHCA to be offered on-line.
How long do I have access to the course?
You have 90 days to access our online courses. You may study and review the lessons as many times as you would like during the 90 days.
Can I have face-to-face interaction with the Instructor?
Yes, certainly. Please contact our student services team who would make arrangements for you to access the instructor by video conferencing, webinars, voice, text, and/or screen sharing.
Does this course have any certificates?
Yes, after successful completion of the training course, you will need to contact Student Services and provide proof of your current med tech certification. When both criteria have been met, you will receive your 2-Hour annual renewal Med Tech certification which is valid for twelve months (1 year) from the date of your course completion date.
When does this course start and end?
This is a self paced course. You can start and stop the course as works for your schedule throughout your 90 day access period.
